Girls Jumpstart Skate Program

The Girls Jumpstart Program at CJ’s SKATEPARK is a program aimed at encouraging female ridership by creating a judgement-free zone where female and female-identified individuals are given the confidence and support to skate so they can thrive in the skating community. Skateboarding is a male dominated sport, so with this program we are trying to eliminate barriers, give females the confidence to try the sport, and show them that the sport is accessible to anyone.

The 3-hour program will include:

  • 1 hour of structured skateboarding lessons and/or clinics following the NCCP Long Term Athlete Development Model.
  • 1 hour educational workshops with the goal of empowering young girls and giving them the tools they need to succeed to thrive both on and off the skateboard.
  • 1 hour of guided free skate time where the girls are encouraged to practice the new skills they learned in class and experiment with new ones they are curious about. Our instructors will be floating around the group and providing tips and advice as the girls require it/ask for it.

Weekly Educational Piece Program Guide*:

Week 1: Women in skateboarding. Professional women skateboarder Annie Guglia and Maddy Balt will be sharing some of their experiences within skateboarding as a female, some of the challenges they faced, how to overcome them and some of the positive sides of being a female involved in the sport

Week 2: Griptape art class. The girls will all learn how to create and customize their own griptape to personalize their board the way they want it. They will also learn about building a brand and creating a logo.

Week 3: Getting to know each other. The girls will use this time to play ice breaker games, make new friends and create the bonds between their peers necessary to support each other and create a positive welcoming environment for all.

Week 4: Healthy Eating. The group will all learn about healthy eating habits and how to create positive routines in the future to keep them healthy and strong.

Week 5: Yoga class. The girls will be taken through a series of yoga flow positions as well as different balance, strength and co-ordination poses.

Week 6: SKATZ boarding lesson. All the girls will learn the basics of teaching skateboarding. This is so the girls can all help their friends learn safely and start to build those friend groups that will last a lifetime.

Week 7: Women in the workplace. The girls will learn in depth about gender equality, what it means, what is looks like, how it applies to their lives and subtle ways to combat against these issues as they grow up.

Week 8: Program wrap up. We will discuss as a group all the things they learned in the previous 7 weeks, what was their favorite/least favorite. We will also learn to set personal goals for ourselves to accomplish within and outside of skateboarding.
